What types of businesses and professionals do you work with at Boreal?

We work with SMEs, freelancers, self-employed professionals, and established entrepreneurs based in the Canary Islands or with business activity in the archipelago. We have particular expertise in sectors such as transport, audiovisual, professional services, and commerce. We are not a large generalist firm — our focus is on closely supporting businesses that value having a consultant who truly understands their operations, not just submitting their tax returns on time.

Do you only work in Tenerife, or across the whole of the Canary Islands?

We are based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, but we work across all eight islands. 90% of our management is handled online (video calls, secure document platform, digital signatures), which allows us to serve clients in El Hierro, La Palma, or Gran Canaria with the same agility as those in Tenerife. For strategic in-person meetings, we travel when it adds real value.

How is Boreal different from a traditional tax advisory firm?

A traditional advisory firm ensures you meet your obligations. Boreal goes a step further: we combine tax advisory with strategic consultancy, digital transformation, and in-depth knowledge of the Canarian REF (RIC, ZEC, AIEM, deductions). The result is that we don’t just file your taxes — we optimise your tax structure and digitalise your operations so you spend less time managing and more time growing your business.

What is the RIC and why does it matter for Canarian businesses?

The Reserva para Inversiones en Canarias (RIC) — Canary Islands Investment Reserve — is an exclusive tax incentive under the REF that allows businesses to reduce up to 90% of undistributed profits from Corporate Tax (or from Personal Income Tax for self-employed in direct estimation), provided those amounts are reinvested in qualifying assets in the Canary Islands within 4 years. Properly applied, it represents one of the largest legal tax savings available in Spain.

Can a small SME apply for ZEC status?

The Zona Especial Canaria (ZEC) has demanding requirements: specific authorised activities, minimum investment (€100,000 in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, €50,000 on the smaller islands), job creation (3 or 5 positions depending on the island), and effective headquarters in the Canary Islands. It is not suitable for every SME, but it is within reach for far more businesses than most people realise. We assess your eligibility together in a free initial consultation.

How does IGIC work, and how is it different from VAT?

IGIC is the Canarian indirect tax that replaces VAT. It works similarly (you charge it to clients and declare it to the Canarian Tax Authority), but with lower rates: the standard rate is 7% compared to 21% VAT on the mainland. Reduced rates of 3% and 0% apply depending on the product or service, and increased rates of 9.5%, 13.5%, and 20% apply in specific cases. Transactions with the mainland have their own set of rules.

What tax incentives exist for audiovisual productions in the Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands offer the highest audiovisual tax deduction in Europe: up to 54% for Canarian production companies and 50% for international productions that shoot or carry out part of their production in the archipelago, with a maximum of €36 million per production. On top of that, there are RIC benefits for profit reinvestment, IGIC advantages compared to mainland VAT, and the option to operate under the ZEC regime. The combination is hard to match anywhere else in Europe.

Do you charge a fixed monthly fee or project-based pricing?

It depends on the service. Recurring tax and accounting advisory is billed at a fixed monthly fee adjusted to the size and complexity of your business (we don’t apply standard rates — every client has their own). One-off projects — Odoo implementation, strategic tax planning, mentoring sessions, digital transformation — are quoted as fixed-price projects. At the first consultation, we provide a clear quote with no surprises.

Do you offer a free initial consultation?

Yes. The first meeting is free and with no commitment. It lasts 30–45 minutes, by video call or in person in Santa Cruz. In that session, we get to understand your situation, give you an initial assessment of tax opportunities (particularly RIC, ZEC, or deductions you may not be taking advantage of), and if there is a good fit, we send you a personalised proposal within 48–72 hours.

Do you also handle digitalisation with Odoo or other tools?

Yes. We implement and configure Odoo (full ERP) for Canarian SMEs: accounting adapted to the REF, IGIC invoicing, client management, projects, inventory, and HR. We also integrate AI tools, process automation, and document management platforms. Our approach combines tax advisory with digitalisation because, in practice, one cannot function properly without the other.
